Perry Blake Biography
Born in County Sligo, North West Ireland on May 10th 1970 Perry Blake is of Irish and French Huguenot ancestry,
He released his eponymous debut album (Co-written with Graham Murphy) to massive critical acclaim across Europe in 1998.
It became a big seller in France and went on to establish him as one of the most highly regarded Singer-songwriters in Europe, appearing regularly on French TV. The Black Sessions were recorded in 1998.
His first 2 singles 'The Hunchback of San Francisco' and 'Genevieve' were Jo Whiley singles of the week on BBC Radio 1 in the UK.
Blake's second album Still Life was released in 1999 and also charted highly in France.
It featured Steve Jansen (Japan) on drums
and Glenn Garrett (Brendan Perry/Dead Can Dance) on bass.
The album was also mostly co-written with long term
collaborator Graham Murphy.
In 2001 Blake released the live album Broken Statues recorded with a full orchestra at Cirque Royale, Brussels in front of an audience of 2,000
California (Naive 2002)
In 2002 Perry Blake released California to massive critical acclaim, the album reached a much wider audience across Europe and featured the hit singles This Life and Ordinary Day
The album featured Glenn Garrett on bass, Neil Conti (David Bowie/Prefab Sprout) on Drums and Rick Carter (The Sisters of Mercy) on Keyboards
California was mostly co-written with Italian composer Marco Sabiu who collaborated with - and was mentored by the late, great Ennio Morricone.
In 2003 Perry collaborated with French electronic artist Emilie Simon who wrote the original music for March of the Penguins and was awarded Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters in France in 2016.
which was to widen his fanbase and cult status in Europe even further – Blake also toured the album as a special guest of Carla Bruni.
After a long hiatus, Perry signed to UK label Moochin'About in 2016 and began work on the follow up to The Crying Room - resulting in Songs of Praise which was released in Autumn 2019 to excellent reviews and strong, steady sales in Europe. It also features the singles Diamonds in The Sun, Miracle & Charlie Chaplin. The album also features a re-worked version of ‘So Many Things’ a track Perry originally wrote for Francoise Hardy and appeared on her platinum selling album ‘Tant de belles choses’ appearing on various TV shows in France as her special guest…
Perry Blake returns in 2023 After 2019 critically acclaimed Songs of Praise, with a new album, which features the single Death Of A Society Girl actor Paul McGann (Withnail & I/Dr Who).
Death Of A Society Girl exudes his usual sweeping romanticism, in a near-hymnal affirmation.., which is up there with class of Brian Ferry, The Blue Nile and anyone else who can turn a night around...
Blake's glimpses of people living a state of mind is one of those great escapes it's very hard to get away from.
Blake's glimpses of people living a state of mind is one of those great escapes
it's very hard to get away from. His gift here is to take a subdued,
grown-up collection of songs but make them sound like they deserve daytime radio.
LISTENERS TIPS FOR 2023
TOM ROBINSON BBC6 MUSIC
A rich evolving sound- scape that cocoons Blake's variety of almost surrealist lyrics.
The limits of the Downtempo rulebook are broadly stretched with a weaving instrumentation that dips and wanders.
heavily reminiscent of the Portishead, Massive Attack open study of the musical possibilities
within a stagnant dynamic, combined with elements of Introspective era Pet shop boys….
THE GOO REVIEW
‘an unsettling, almost ’orwellian feel’ and along the way we can luxuriate in Perry Blake’s generous, comforting voice –
spotting traces of Nick Drake, trip hop and Gary Numan”
”Blake sounds like a cross between Bowie and Michael Nyman – only better”
Further solidifying his signature downtempo and melancholy brand of ambient and cinematic pop,
