Songs Of Peace & Good Will
Conducted by COLIN JONES
Organist : Tudor Davis
The Rhos Male Voice Choir is a choir of miners. They are the inheritors of the great musical tradition, which generations of miners in the North Wales district have sustained with remarkable continuity. Out of his village have emerged the finest voices as well as the ablest composers from Wales. The faces on the front cover are those miners whom the light of day is a benediction. Who could feel more deeply the wonder and radiance of the christmas message than these men who spend much of their lives in darkness...
A third of most days of their lives is spent groping and burrowing like moles, hundreds of feet under the surface of the earth. Each goes about his dark tasks guided by a ray of light from an electric eye on his helmet. They are strangers to sunlight.
Shining through the day’s grime is the joy of reunion with the light , the gladness of thanksgiving at the end of each shift. This photograph conveys the message of peace on earth and goodwill among men, which this record will carry all over the world…
The choice of Welsh miners to convey this message in a song is also apt.
These mining communities are unique among the wide racial varieties which make up the Europe we know today. Their harmonious blending of artisan skills with high intellectual pursuits produces a textures of life comparable only with that of the Meistersingers of mediaeval Germany.
Here, then is a choir of highly trained, near-professional voices which you can also hear, most evenings during the winter months, ringing out the day of toil in rehearsals at the village of Rhosllannerchrugog. They bring you in three languages an emotional experience that is universal. They break all sound barriers.
And so, when play this record, we ask you to take another look at those faces on the other side of this cover. It may help you to delve deeper into the source of that radiance and see, if only as through a glass darkly, something of the wonder which came to those shepherds of old as they watched their flocks by night.
