about

This 130 track (10 hours.!) release contains compositions and original recordings by the pioneers of this fascinating style of sound, compiled here by Moochin' About. It features tracks recorded largely in the 1940s, 50s and 60s, from names as diverse as the ever popular John Cage, Frank Zappa s idol, Edgar Varese, Sergeant Pepper cover star Karlheinz Stockhausen and even Auntie herself in the form of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop - who were leaders in the development of sonic electronics, this compilation features the bizarre, the avant-garde , the experimental and even, on occasion, the fairly melodic...

This release also features one of the very earliest and most important examples of electronic tape music to be pressed on to vinyl. Originally a privately pressed 1955 LP by Otto Luening and Vladimir Ussachevsky was released on a one-off label owned by businessman Gene Bruck to document a custom made performance at the New York Museum Of Modern Art back in 1952. Its the first recorded unison of Otto Luening and Vladimir Ussachevsky and a partnership that founded the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center at Columbia University in 1959, which would later count Ilhan Mimaroglu, Wendy Carlos, Dariush Dolat Shahi and Alice Shields as its graduates...

The October 28th 1952 performance showcased the debut of the seminal Fantasy In Space based on resampled flute recordings which were manipulated on magnetic tape to create an otherworldly melodic composition, stylistically begging comparison with the early recording of Kraftwerk (made some twenty years later) and bringing a palatable and tuneful alternative to the stark avant garde experiments of their French counterparts. The mechanical construction of the track was even “performed” on prime time American television to celebrate this groundbreaking approach to modern music. Alongside four other tracks the full programme comprises further experiments with manipulated recordings of bells and woodwind instruments subjected to mechanical “augmentation, diminution and retrograding” to create pieces that “cannot be played with conventional instruments.” In the following years labels like Folkways and Desto would also plunder this important session as a milestone in electronic music.

this collection also features some iconic albums such as...

Tom Dissevelt...
captured the essence of the space mood and science fiction aesthetic. Fantasy in Orbit draws the blueprint for a future sound, later recognized as "Electronic Music," as simple as that. The music is this jaunty space-age swirl, with synthetic oscillations and bubbling textures, creating what is one moment playful, the next menacing, as they struggle to reign in the beast that would become electronic music. You can hear everything from bachelor pad exotica to avant-garde electronics, and even a primitive precursor to acid house.

Man In Space
Taxi to tomorrow with this saucer of space-age sounds! Sound, sustain, and silence unite, polyrhythmic Hammond organs and xylophones round off a cosmic eruption! Created for the 1962 World’s Fair, this album bundles beautifully textured space sounds with period-perfect narration. Take the Gayway to a surplus of recognizable moments lifted for modern-day samples!
With Sounds is a commemorative album of 12 tracks dedicated to the Seattle World’s Fair. Envisioned and conducted by Attilio “Art” Mineo, this unearthly album was released in 1959, but its roots go as far back as 1951 when Mineo carved out many of the uncannily clandestine melodies. They’re an inebriated burlesque of circus organs, tipsily galloping bongo beats and electronic hydrazine expectorations that enclose the listener. In anticipation of the World’s Fair, Attilio mined these pieces from his archive and paired them with out-of-this-world narration to guide your journey. This narration is a milky way of recognizable sound bites that have been sampled by the best...

Soothing Sounds for Baby ~ Raymond Scott (1962) is a three-volume set of ambient electronic music by American composer, musician, and inventor Raymond Scott. Scott originally intended to lull infants to sleep with the music, but later generations have found value in the music for its minimalist aspects, often comparing it to the works of Brian Eno, Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream despite having predated such artists by more than a decade.

Originally released in collaboration with the Gesell Institute of Human Development, the volumes are split up into three age groups: Volume 1 is 1 to 6 months; Volume 2 is 6 to 12 months; and Volume 3 is 12 to 18 months. The music gets more complex with each volume. Scott created much of the music on the albums with instruments he created, such as the Electronium and the Clavivox. "Particularly on Soothing Sounds for Baby, Scott proved to be one of the first composers to merge the Brave New World of electronic sounds with a rhythmic pop sensibility.
